Conil

Conil - Town:
Conil de la Frontera is an enchanting white fishing town that spills onto a long stretch of golden sandy beach. A thriving seaside holiday destination, Conil offers the visitor a wide selection of shops, bars and restaurants yet remains largely non-commercialised. It retains a traditional Spanish atmosphere, with narrow cobblestone streets, tapas bars, an open air market at weekends and pavement cafes around the main plazas.
Conil is an ideal location for a relaxing holiday as, in addition to the many facilities in the town, it also has miles of unspoilt, golden sandy beaches (some of the largest in Europe) stretching around the coast as far as the eye can see.
Conil - Beaches:
The beaches of Conil are in three sections: La Fontanilla near the town; Fuente de Gallo backed by cliffs to the north of the town; and Calas de Roche, which has numerous coves to the north. Some of these lovely beaches are difficult to access to which makes them very quiet except at weekends in the height of summer.
Another spectacular beach nearby, with a wide bay of brilliant golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see is at El Palmar. Here you can also stop off at one of the excellent beach restaurants for lunch.
Rural Conil:
The rolling hills of the countryside are covered with fields of sunflowers and corn, pine forests and meadows where beautiful Andalucian horses and herds of fighting bulls graze. In the spring hundreds of varieties of wild flowers add colour to the pastoral scene.
Conil - Gastronomy:
Along with most of the towns on the Costa de la Luz, Conil is renowned for the quality and variety of its seafood. Here you can enjoy luscious langoustines, shellfish, locally caught sea-bass, bream, swordfish and tuna. You can also try the ortiguillas (deep fried sea anemones), which you can only find in the Cadiz area.
In little bars along the coast you can sample delicious tapas of whitebait, squid and sardines. Inland you will find quails, partridge, rabbit and venison on the menu served with fresh vegetables and salads.
The local white wine is ideal served as an accompaniment to the region's seafood or you can sample all the varieties of sherry from Fino to Oloroso from the great Bodegas of Jerez, El Puerto and Sanlucar.
Conil - Historical sightseeing:
There are some historical monuments well worth visiting in Conil, including the Tower of Guzman el Bueno, the Church of Santa Catalina, Convento de la Victoria featuring interesting paintings and the Convento de San Francesco de Paula, where you can see the image of Nuestra Senora de las Virtudes (Our Lady of Virtue) the Patron Saint of Conil.
