Vejer

Vejer - Overview:
Tucked away between the sea and Sierra mountains, Vejer de la Frontera is one of the loveliest white towns (pueblos blancos) you will find in Andalucia. Perched on a hill, 600 feet above the surrounding countryside, Vejer is a perfectly preserved example of what many towns were like during the five centuries of Islamic occupation. Today Vejer has a relaxing atmosphere where the locals welcome visitors and small bars and restaurants make wandering through the town a pleasure.
In addition to the enchanting attraction of the town, Vejer is also very close to the unspoilt coastline of the Costa de la Luz. From the miles of dune-backed sands of nearby El Palmar, to cliff-top walks through the umbrella pines above Canos de Meca; from the kite-surfing capital of Tarifa, to horse-riding through the surf below the Cape of Trafalgar, the coast's attractions are as diverse as they are compelling and all within easy reach of Vejer.
Vejer - Historic sightseeing:
The joy of Vejer is to wander around its labyrinth of whitewashed, cobblestone lanes and backstreets to enjoy the historic feel of the town. Vejer's old quarter has an abundance of very interesting historical monuments.
Vejer was first settled in the pre-Christian era, but the old town took its current form during centuries of Islamic occupation up to 1250AD and in the period after the Christian reconquest, when the main fortifications were built.
You can still see the outline of the 15th century town walls some parts have been restored with their archways and gateways into the old town. The castle, turreted medieval walls, the minaret of the old mosque, churches and convents are a blend of Moorish, Visigoth and Mudejar styles.
You can visit the old Moorish built castle, tucked away down a narrow backstreet with a classic 11th century arch leading into a jasmine scented courtyard. The church is built on the site of the old mosque and the minaret is still standing, now crowned with bells.
The Plaza de Espana is an attractive spot, surrounded by date palms with an ornate fountain decorated with bright ceramics and 4 sprouting frogs at its centre. The Town Hall with its facade of the fabled Casa de la Inquisicion, overlooks the square.
Vejer - Out and about:
Surrounded by natural parks and overlooking the hills of the Alcornocales, Vejer is an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful and historic province of Cadiz and its rich Andalucian culture. Apart from fabulous golden sandy beaches, nearby are the sites of the battle of Trafalgar, the important Roman ruins of Bolonia, and Tarifa, where the Moors first entered Spain. The historic cities of Cadiz, Jerez and Seville are all just a day trip away and, to the south across the straits of Gibraltar, the mystical allure of Morocco awaits.
