Ovio, Asturias & Cantabria - Overview:

Ovio is in a beautifully quiet location. There are lovely walks in the area, down country lanes through the village and down to the beach of Cuevas del Mar. Ovio itself is a spread out village, situated between the main road and the sea and only has a small village bar. The countryside is pretty and undulating, with pastures, small woods, and houses with gardens and flowers.

Ovio, Asturias & Cantabria - Beaches:

The beach of Cuevas del Mar (scene of many films and one of the most frequently awarded with the Blue Flag of the European Community) is nearby, as well as many other smaller beaches along this coastline which are mainly accessible on foot - Playa de Puerto Seco, Playa de San Antonio - and it is a lovely coast to explore.

To get to the beach of Cuevas del Mar it is best to go by car since it is about 2km away from Ovio. There is a car park beside the beach and a small beach bar open in high season. It is a pleasant sheltered bay with fine sand, and like most Asturian beaches it is best at low tide.

Ovio, Asturias & Cantabria - Shopping:

For the nearest shopping Nueva is a pretty, small town with small supermarkets, banks with cashpoints, chemist, bars and restaurants. More serious shopping can be done in Llanes (approximately 18km away) or Ribadesella at 15km, where there are daily covered markets, supermarkets, bus and railway stations, lots of bars and restaurants.

The colourful weekly street market in Nueva is on Saturday mornings and in Posada on Fridays, in Llanes on Tuesdays and in Ribadesella on Wednesdays.

Ovio, Asturias & Cantabria - Fiestas:

Local holidays and village fiestas in the area are worth going to and fun for the children since there is usually some type of fun fair at the larger ones. In Posada the fiestas are 25th July (Santiago's Day), Villahormes on 22nd July which is Santa Maria Magdalena, and in Nueva on 25/26 July celebrating San Juanon, La Blanca on 7/8 September and Santo Cristo on 13/14 September. When there is a fiesta, the shops are sometimes closed all day, or just in the afternoon.
