Bustio

Bustio, Asturias & Cantabria - Overview:
Bustio is a small, usually quiet village, situated beside the River Deva, just before it reaches the sea. This river divides Asturias from Cantabria and on the other side of the river, immediately opposite Bustio, is the town of Unquera. There are no sea views from either town since the river widens from here to form an open flat estuary before going through a gap in the hills, which are beside this lovely rugged coastline.
Bustio, Asturias & Cantabria - Getting there:
The main road along the coastline, N634, runs between Bustio and the coast and this road is now a toll-free motorway from Unquera to Santander and then to Bilbao and the French border. There is a toll road between Bilbao and France, which affords good access to and exit from Bustio, to visit the nearby beaches of La Franca in Asturias (10 minutes) and Pechon (from Unquera 10 minutes).
Bustio, Asturias & Cantabria - Out and About:
Unquera is the gateway to the magnificent Picos de Europa mountain range and the Potes area; up through the Hermida Gorge on the N621 (approximately 30-40 minutes away, depending on the traffic) and through the narrow gorge. It is an easy journey, the road follows the river, but it does get busy in summer and overtaking is difficult. The other access to the mountains is to turn right in Panes into Asturias, along the AS114 road to Arenas de Cabrales, Covadonga and Cangas de Onis.
Bustio, Asturias & Cantabria - Village Life:
The main street through Bustio runs from the N634 coming from Asturias, through the village and over the nearby bridge to Unquera, but is not used much as the main entrance to Unquera and the Picos de Europa is via another junction.
Along this street there is a village shop for basic shopping and, where the street widens to form a small square, there is a good restaurant El Puerto, and bar with terrace. The local supermarket is within walking distance across the bridge in Unquera High Street. Here there is also a good street market on Wednesdays and in San Vicente on Saturdays. Unquera also has banks with cashpoints, chemists and a health centre (take your EEC health card for free treatment).
Bustio, Asturias & Cantabria - Fiestas:
As with the rest of Spain, the locals celebrate their fiestas with lots of noise, singing and dancing well into the early hours. Unquera celebrates its main fiesta around the 30th August. Local holidays are in Bustio on 16 July and in Unquera on 30th August.
