Santillana del Mar is located about 7km from the sea, is a beautiful village of grand old mansions, each with its coat-of-arms, and traditional farmhouses. It is popular with visitors as a cultural centre and there are two museums (often with exhibitions of more than local interest) while the wonderful Romanesque Collegiate Church holds concerts.
Santillana del Mar also has some very good pottery shops as well as stalls selling local produce, milk, cake (sobaos) and trinkets. It also has a good choice of cafes and restaurants. In summer Santillana del Mar is busy but even then, the local farmers continue about their business, so that cows and carts mix with the camera-carrying tourists.

Situated on the northern route of the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela, Santillana del Mar is a beautiful medieval town which was developed around the collegiate church of Santa Maria. Its various defence towers and Renaissance palaces make Santillana one of the most important historical areas of Cantabria. However, this Cantabrian town houses its greatest treasure on the outskirts: the Altamira caves, known as the Sistine Chapel of the Paleolithic Age and declared a World Heritage site.
