The narrow strip between the Picos de Europa and the sea is some of the best dairy farming country in Spain. Here, apart from the truly fabulous beaches, you will find little farming communities where oxen and horses still pull carts. To the visitor it appears as if time has stood still, as cows are herded through village streets with their cowbells ringing.

Asturias & Cantabria - Fiestas:
There are also local fiestas that every village, however small, celebrates during summer. Fireworks are let off at odd moments night and day, people dance in the village square, formidable amounts of food and drink are consumed, and there is usually a funfair. During August, Santander holds an international arts festival attracting many world renowned performers, orchestras and theatre groups.

Asturias & Cantabria - Getting there:
There are scheduled flights with Iberia and British Airways from Heathrow to Bilbao. Ryanair's flys from Stansted to Santander and there is a daily flight with Easy Jet from Stansted to Asturias airport (OVD). However most travellers usually prefer to take one of the two ferry crossings.
Brittany Ferries sail from Plymounth to Santander on Sundays and Wednesdays (ferry crossing 16 hours). P&O sail from Portsmouth to Bilbao every three days (ferry crossing 35 hours; return 29 hours).
We recommend you take or hire a car. Public transport, while not exactly unreliable, is very limited - and many of the area's outstanding features are only accessible by car.
