Gran Canaria Beaches Guide

Gran Canaria Beaches - Overview:
The south of Gran Canaria has many golden beaches, whereas the beaches in the north tend to be more shingle than sand and the slightly rougher sea makes them a favourite for surfers. There is however a charming little beach on the north coast at Sardina where Christopher Columbus briefly docked to mend his mast en-route to America, not forgetting Las Palmas' superb 3-mile sandy beach - Playa de las Canteras.
Gran Canaria Beaches - Maspalomas:
Maspalomas in Gran Canaria is an absolute paradise for beach lovers. It comprises the beach resorts of Aguila, Las Burras, San Agustin and Playa del Ingles, all belonging to the municipality of San Bartolome de Tirajana. The wonderful coastline stretches for 17km, with sand dunes, wide sandy beaches, shallow waters and an excellent all year round climate.
Gran Canaria Beaches - Puerto de Mogan:
The beach by Mogan's harbour is relatively small but well provided for with sun-loungers and beachside cafs/restaurants. There are other beached in this area of Gran Canaria, beyond Mogan in Veneguera and Tasarte. For serious beach lovers is the new Amadores beach, 15 minutes drive away from Puerto de Mogan, just before Puerto Rico, with an ample selection of bars and restaurants. Finally, Maspalomas, with its famous dunes and Playa del Ingls is a further 15 minutes drive. Before Puerto Rico is a sensational swimming pool and small beach at Taurito (payment to go in pool).
Gran Canaria Beaches - Puerto Rico:
There are two beaches at Puerto Rico, a large man-made one ideal for watersports and swimming, and the other, smaller and quieter is good for sunbathing. The main crescent-shaped, man-made, sandy beach is safe for bathing and is flanked by the harbours, both of which serve as a base for the many yachts which visit the port and for the boat trips and water sports for which the resort is famous.
From the south-western end of the promenade, a stroll along the cliffside walkway takes you further south-west, to the beach at Playa de los Amadores. This is a popular vantage points at dusk for watching the sun slip down behind the neighbouring Canary Island of Tenerife. This happens amazingly quickly so make sure you get there in time!!
