Calella de Palafrugell, Costa Brava

Calella de Palafrugell - Overview:
Colourful Calella de Palafrugell, located about 150km north of Barcelona, is one of the most typical villages of the Costa Brava. Traditional houses cluster around small, sandy beaches overlooked by the village church and pine clad hills. Modern development has not spoilt the charm of the village and the local people are friendly and hospitable. Calella has a good selection of bars and restaurants and the nearby town of Palafrugell has all amenities.
Calella de Palagrugell is the largest of Palafrugell's beach resorts and consists of a series of pretty coves strung out like pearls behind a fishing village with whitewashed arches on the promenade. Fishing boats are pulled up on the sand and the seafood restaurants beside the water are always busy. Development here has been low-rise and low-key; this traditional resort seems to have found a middle way between the excesses of mass tourism and the exclusivity of some of its smaller neighbours. A cliff path leads in around 30 minutes to Llafranc, affording a delightful stroll. High above the bay the Jardin Botanic de Cap Roig is a botanical garden with stunning views.
Calella de Palafrugell - Beaches:
Regarded by many as the most beautiful resort on the Spanish mainland, this traditional fishing village with its sandy coves and beaches has for many years provided a relaxing holiday destination for families from all over the world. A coastal walk from the botanical gardens and El Golfet beach to Calella's twin village Llafranc takes you along some of the Costa Brava's most picturesque bays. These pathways have been used for various purposes throughout history; to get to the coves if a ship was sinking, to watch the horizon to prevent pirate raids and even transport contraband after the Spanish civil war. The beaches, restaurants, bars and small shops in the villages make this walk an absolute delight. Take a walk or bicycle ride into the woods and fields behind the coast and you enter a tranquil rural world.
Calella de Palafrugell - Out & About:
The villages of Llafranc and Calella have numerous bars and restaurants and the town of Palafrugell offers excellent shopping, main banks, cork museum and restaurants. Calella has a bus service to Palafrugell, which links with the main transport system for Gerona and the whole of the Costa Brava.
Calella de Palafrugell - Activities:
There are several diving schools situated in Calella and Llafranc. Other pastimes that can be enjoyed include horseriding, golf (3 championship courses lie within 20 minutes of Calella, Emporda (PGA) Pals and the new course at Serres de Pals), walking and cycling (for which there are miles and miles of marked tracks and paths leading right up to the Pyrenees), sailing, various sea sports, ballooning and of course gastronomy.
