Beach, Corralejo, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Corralejo - Overview:

Located on the northern tip of the island, Corralejo was originally a small fishing village centred around a little square and harbour. It has grown since the eighties and it has now become one of the most popular cosmopolitan holiday resorts on Fuerteventura. It offers a good and varied selection of shops, bars and international restaurants and most of these are located along Corralejo's main avenue which leads right down through the music square and on to the harbour, which looks across the other side of town and the sand dunes.

In the delightful old quarter you can explore a labyrinth of streets with tucked away tapas bars and excellent seafood restaurants down by the harbour. You can still find some of the original fishermen's houses in Corralejo's old quarter, these are simple and quaint but most have now been transformed into shops and restaurants.

Luckily, Corralejo has managed to retain its original Canarian charm and atmosphere, and there are still white sandy beaches in the town centre, where you can soak up the Canarian sunshine.

Corralejo - Out and about:

Corralejo caters for all ages and there's a wide variety of things to do here, from watersports, tennis, glass bottom boat trips, ferry trips to the neighbouring Canary island of Lanzarote and the unihabited island of Los Lobos, Jeep safaris, island tours, mountainbiking, motorbike tours.

Corralejo - Day trips to Isla de Lobos:

A popular day out is a visit to the uninhabited nature reserve on the island of Lobos, which lies just 2km offshore. Isla de los Lobos is located between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote and you can reach this island withing 30 minutes by ferry from Corralejo harbour.

Lobos island, Corralejo, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Lobos island is small enough to be walked round in a few hours, but large enough for you to be able to feel that you are the only person on the island. The fact that Los Lobos is a nature reserve means that you are not free to trample all over the island, but a series of well defined paths allows all of the island to be explored.

The views from the top of The Caldera de la Montana are particularly rewarding, though they are not challenge free, as the 127m climb to the summit is too strenuous for some people. The unforgiving path is made from hard rock that is difficult to tackle if you are not wearing suitable footwear. The views from the top are however well worth the effort. Fuerteventura is only 6km away, and Lanzarote is not much further in the opposite direction. There are excellent views of both islands and you have a bird's eye view of surfers waiting for a suitable wave to roll in from the Atlantic.

Sand dunes, Corralejo, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Having made the short boat journey from Corralejo, stopping to watch the fish through the glass bottom of the boat, many tourists first visit the small beach Playa Bahia close to where the boat lands.

There is a wide range of flora on the island but very little shade from the Canarian sunshine. Although the island is inhabited there is a lighthouse and you do have a choice of two restaurants here (the delicious fresh Paella is highly recommended). However, in case the restaurants are closed (or full) we recommend you take enough food and water with you to get you through the day. Also we advise you have adequate protection from the sun and, if you intend to tackle the mountain, don't forget to take some sturdy footwear.

Corralejo - Nightlife:

During the evening Corralejo town can be quite lively and there is often live music played in the square near the harbour.

There is entertainment to suit all tastes and ages from international bars and nightclubs with live bands to tavernas and traditional Canarian restaurants with acoustic guitar music.

Corralejo - Beaches:

There are small beaches within the town but most people head for the famous dunes which start about 2km out of town and extend for about 10km. This 'national park' is popular with windsurfers and naturists and a novelty 'mini-train' shuttles visitors along the road from Corralejo to the edge of the village, from where you can walk to the dunes.

These dunes (which are a protected nature reserve) lie just beyond the town. The dunes spread for miles along the east coast and this is what makes Corralejo such a paradise for beach lovers. No building work is allowed in this area with the exception of two hotels.

Corralejo - Activities:

Apart from beach based watersports, the area is great for walking and cycling. Corralejo is at the edge of the Natural Park with a vast area of sand dunes, blown across the Atlantic from the Sahara. The area is wild, there are no paths and many visitors enjoy the challenge of climbing the steep sand dunes to enjoy the view of a desert landscape.

Corralejo is also a good place for mountain biking. You can cycle along the coast and there are also bumpy tracks inland which demand more energy and good shock absorbers!
