Tui, Pontevedra
Tui - Overview:
Tui is located in the south of the Pontevedra province and is separated from Portugal by the river Mino. The Portuguese town of Valenca sits on a hill just across the river and the two towns face each other over a valley, connected by a 19th century bridge.
Tui - Getting there:
The main AP-9 toll road runs from Santiago de Compostela, through Pontevedra, which makes Tui easily accessible from Galicias more northern towns. Tui can be reached by car from Santiago in about two and a half hours.
Tui - History:
Tui had humble origins and started as a Roman settlement called Tude. It now has a strong Celtic connection and shares the same turbulent history of many of Galicias towns, including the wars with Portugal and the Normans in addition to being a part of the Visigoth empire. Tui always enjoyed the benefits of being perched on the brow of a hill with the meandering Mino river in the valley beneath; and it has a well-preserved, compact historic quarter with a number of important monuments - the most significant being its castle cathedral.
Tui - Sightseeing:
The main square is a popular starting point for most of the city's cultural visitors and it is lined with attractive Galician style buildings, a couple of churches and a bandstand. Many pavement cafes and bars in the open plaza offer a good spot to enjoy a refreshing drink before before planning your route around the old quarter.
Tui is a fascinating town to explore. The oldest parts of Tui's walls were built during the reign of King Ferdinand and date back to the 12th century. Inevitably through, through subsequent stages of the town's development and expansion, large sections of these walls have sadly been demolished. However but one of the original gates, the Pia, still remains.
