Agaete
Agaete - Overview:
The small town of Agaete is located on the north coast of Gran Canaria, at the end of a steep ravine - the Barranco de Agaete. The town, with its labyrinth of narrow streets and whitewashed houses, is surrounded by lush vegetation. Here bananas, mangos, papayas, oranges, lemons and other sub-tropical plants and trees grow in abundance on steep slopes. In the wilder parts, the terrain is cut into artificial terraces, to aid cultivation. This small Gran Canarian fishing town has beaches nestled between cliffs. The nearby town of Puerto de las Nieves boasts a good range of seafood restaurants and Cafes. Along the coastline of Agaete, you will find Dedo de Dios (Gods Finger), a basalt monolith jutting up the sea. There is also the archaeological excavation site of Malpais.
Agaete - Out and About:
Despite this tranquil little Gran Canarian town celebrating its 500th anniversary in 1981, it only offers a few historic sites, the oldest of which is the parish church (Iglesia de la Concepcion), located in the Plaza de la Constitucion. Dating from the second half of the 19th century, here you will see some attractive noble houses with carved wooden balconies. Nearby is a small botanical garden, (the Huerto de las Flores), with many species of Canarian and sub-tropical flowers. Many artists have made Agaete their home and you can also explore numerous art galleries here. The nearby town of Puerto de las Nieves has black sand beaches, some of which practice naturism. There are also varied water sports available.
Agaete - Local Fiestas:
Agaete's local Gran Canarian population celebrate the largest feast of the region - the Fiesta de la Rama. This fiesta originates from an obscure Guanche rain dance and is celebrated on the 4th of August.
