Maspalomas - Overview:

Maspalomas in Gran Canaria is an absolute paradise for beach lovers. It comprises the beach resorts of Aguila, Las Burras, San Agustin and Playa del Ingles, all belonging to the municipality of San Bartolome de Tirajana. The wonderful coastline stretches for 17km, with sand dunes, wide sandy beaches, shallow waters and an excellent all year round climate.

The more upmarket Maspalomas resort has smart hotels, luxury villas and the largest golf course on the island. It is separated from Playa del Ingles by a spectacular stretch of 400 hectares of dunes, which have been declared a natural protected area. Vehicles are not allowed here and you can only cross on foot or camel.

The preservation of these dunes has provided a habitat for a number of rare plant species, some of which are only to be found in the Canaries, having managed to survive in this arid environment. This is also a favourite area for naturists and it is popular with the gay community.

Maspalomas - Nature and Sightseeing:

At the western end of this nature park you will find El Oasis, an area with ultra-chic hotels, which is bordered by La Charca, the remains of a sea-water lagoon fringed with palm trees. The area is home to many species of migratory birds from Europe, stopping here on their route to Africa.

A noteworthy sightseeing attraction close to the Oasis is the Faro de Maspalomas, a lighthouse built in 1886 standing at 65 metres high and dominating the Gran Canarian landscape as it guides hundreds of ships with its powerful light.

There is a vast array of entertainment and fun to be found in and around the area, and just a few kilometres north of Maspalomas are major attractions such as the Aquasur, (the largest water park on Gran Canaria); Holiday World (extensive amusement park with a Ferris wheel); Palmitos Park (ornithological park with an aquarium, butterfly house and orchids); Sioux City (Wild West theme park) and the fascinating Mundo Aborigen (Aboriginal world theme park).
