Puerto Rico - Overview:
Puerto Rico is a popular resort set on a hillside, with stunning views over the ocean, with luxury yachts moored in the Puerto Rico marina. The sheltered bay is safe for swimming and sunloungers are available. Numerous bars and cafes are nearby - ideal for that refreshing drink. Puerto Rico is renowned for watersports and you can hire everything from pedaloes to dinghies and water-skiing instruction. The diving centre offers lessons for beginners and experienced divers alike and there are also above water excursions, such as Nautical Safari. Puerto Rico caters for a wide range of tastes and has two shopping centres with a wide range of duty-free goods including photographic equipment, electrical appliances and perfumes. During the evening you have a choice of nightlife from music bars to discos.
Suitable for families, couples and singles of all ages, Puerto Rico is a lively resort in the south of Gran Canaria, built along and up the high sides of a valley. It is a modern residential development, built around an old fishing town, with many facilities to offer the tourist, such as watersports and a yacht harbour for over 50 boats.
Most of the holiday accommodation in Puerto Rico is situated on a hill, with steep steps leading down to the beach, therefore this resort is not recommended for visitors with very young children or walking difficulties.
Puerto Rico - Beaches:
There are two beaches, a large man-made one ideal for watersports and swimming, and the other, smaller and quieter is good for sunbathing. The main crescent-shaped, man-made, sandy beach is safe for bathing and is flanked by the harbours, both of which serve as a base for the many yachts which visit the port and for the boat trips and water sports for which the resort is famous.
From the south-western end of the promenade, a stroll along the cliffside walkway takes you further south-west, to the beach at Playa de los Amadores. This is a popular vantage points at dusk for watching the sun slip down behind the neighbouring Canary Island of Tenerife. This happens amazingly quickly so make sure you get there in time!!
Puerto Rico - Shopping & Entertainment:
The pedestrianised centre of Puerto Rico is dominated by the Commercial Centre, with a vast range of shops, bars and nightclubs. At one end of the main valley area is the Aqua Park and at the other end, pretty tropical gardens which lead to a lido and the mostly pedestrianised promenade, lined with beach bars, restaurants and bazaars.
Puerto Rico - Out & About:
A regular ferry service from either harbour will take you to Puerto de Mogan or to Arguineguin via Anfi, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the lovely south-west coastline. These are also all easily accessible by bus, taxi or car. While staying in Puerto Rico, you can try an excursion or shopping trip to Las Palmas, to pick up those discounted designer offers!
