Vathi is built around a deep and sheltered bay with a narrow entrance. It has preserved much its Venetian architecture even though the village was almost destroyed by the 1953 earthquake. Following the earthquake most of Vathi's buildings were re-built in the same ancient style. Today there is strict building control. New buildings constructed in anything other than the traditional architectural style and colour are prohibited.

Those seeking historic sightseeing will love Vathi. Vathi is where Odysseas Androutsos (the Greek hero of the War of Independence) was born - his house is located here. Vathi also has interesting churches and a fine restored cathedral. There is also an archaeological museum which has a collection of various historical artefacts from the Geometric, Mycenaean and Corinthian periods.
