The Greek island of Ithaka (otherwise known as Ithaca) is located in the Ionian Sea, just off the northeast coast of Kefalonia and to the west and within sight of mainland Greece. Vathi (or Vathy) is the capital of Ithaka, and it is home to one of the world's largest natural harbours. Like the rest of Greece, the holiday island of Ithaka is steeped in a rich and turbulent history. The island has been inhabited since two thousand years BC, in fact one olive tree on Ithaka is claimed to be at least 1,500 years old. But Ithaka is perhaps most famous as being the home of the mythological hero Odysseus.

Ithaka is a sleepy little island with a rocky terrain. It has so far escaped the attention of mass tourism and remains generally unspoiled. The Greek island of Ithaka is almost divided in two by the bay at Aetos, which is overshadowed by large peninsulas to the north and south. The north of Ithaka has the best holiday resorts and more interesting walking trails.

The south of Ithaka is home to the island's capital, Vathi and that impressive natural harbour. The beaches on Ithaka are pebble and stone and set within deeply carved bays. Western Ithaka has a very rugged coastline, whereas the east of the island boasts lush farmland and rolling hills.
