Katelios is a small Greek village located on the south east coast of Kefalonia, between the busy holiday resorts of Skala and Lourdas. Katelios has a small harbour, a beach with a few quiant tavernas by the sea, bars, a couple of souvenir huts, mini market and car rental. The beach area with the bars is mosty on one level with no hills to climb, so it's an ideal location for a relaxing stroll.
Katelios Holiday - Geography
Katelios is a coastal village, situated in a large, flat, fertile plain, nestled between the villages of Hionata, Mavrata, Markopoulo and Ratzakli. This delightful fishing village is surrounded by fertile agricultural land and rocky hills. From Katelios you can looks across the water to the neighburing island of Zante and further over to the Greek mainland.
The old village (Ano Katelios), and is where most of the resident locals live, while Kato Katelios is the relaxed holiday area which has slowly developed. The areas surrounding Katelios are home to some of the Kefalonia's most dramatic beaches which are a magnet for people seeking a largely beach-based holiday.

Katelios is in a rural location which offers an abundance of nature, flora & fauna; so it is also a haven for nature lovers, walkers and bird watchers.
Katelios is also home to a group called The Katelios Group. This is a local NGO that researchs and seeks to protect the population of sea Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta) that have made Kefalonia their home. The Katelios Group also teaches tourists and locals the importance of protecting the environment.
Katelios Holiday - History
There are Roman ruins located just behind the main Aghia Barbara beach which suggest there was a settlement in Katelios over 2,000 years ago. There is evidence to suggest that Katelios was a port and trading centre during the Venetian period, due to the remains of an old pier in the bay. Katelios was once a thriving fishing village but it now mainly relies on tourism for the majority of its income.

Nightlife in Katelios is relaxed and traditionally Greek. It is usually centred around tavernas and bars, some with live entertainment, Greek dancing or barbecues.
