Skala is a very popular Greek holiday resort in Kefalonia. Located on the south-eastern edge of Kefalonia, Skala was perhaps one of the island's best kept secrets, with its impressive mountainous backdrop and breathtaking scenery. Skala has a stunning sandy beach - that is over 2 miles long - making it an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Skala is one of the more developed resorts in the south of Kefalonia, it is quite lively and offers an abundance of holiday accommodation, although it still retains a friendly, traditionally Greek atmosphere.
Skala Holiday - Geography
Skala is located on a beautiful pine-clad headland at the base of the mountains. One of Skala's main attractions is its beautiful sandy beach that gently shelves into the sea. The beach is so long it rarely gets crowded. There are lots of facilities close to Skals beach which makes it an ideal choice for a family holiday.
Bathed in Greek sunshine and lapped by a turquoise blue sea, Skala is one of the most popular coastal resorts in Kefalonia. There is a dive centre and an abundance of other water sports available. If you prefer a more sedate activity, then Skala has numerous tavernas bars - many with outdoor pools - which offer an ideal location to relax, unwind and watch the world go bye.
Skala Holiday - Activities
Skala has a small high street (just 100 yards from the beach) which is the lively hub of the town. Skala's high street is lined with local shops selling unusual artefacts and craftwork, along with a range of bars, tavernas and resturants to chose from. During the eveing Skala's main street is pedestrianised and closed to traffic, thus inviting visitors to take a relaxing stroll through the town.
There are plenty of historic sights to see in Skala too; with beautiful Roman mosaics dating from 300 years BC (on display in Skala's small museum on the edge of the village) and the ruins of Skala Old Town that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1953.
Nature conservation lovers will not be disappointed either as the infamous Loggerhead Turtles nest at Potamaki Beach. There are also organised evening 'turtle watches' where you can view these fascinating creatures without harming their habitat or threatening their survival.
