The popularity of holidays in Kefalonia has increased as the 2001 Hollywood blockbuster Captain Corelli's Mandolin was filmed on the island. Fishing is very common throughout the waters within and around the island, and the harbours of Argostoli and Lixouri are the main fishing centres. Kefalonia is also well known for its endangered loggerhead turtle population. These fascinating creatures nest at Kaminia beach and they are closely protected and observed by the Sea Turtle Protection society.
