La Gomera
Stunning scenery and superb walks amid undeveloped, natural landscapes
Only a short ferry crossing from the neighbouring Canary Island of Tenerife, La Gomera is a totally different island where the pace of life is much slower. This small, round Canary island rises up from the sea with sheer cliffs and steep hillsides leading up to the mist shrouded National Park of Garajonay - a dense mass of woodland with unique Canarian fauna and flora crossed by swift mountain streams.
Plunging ravines lead to green valleys, passing through little villages, down to the Atlantic ocean where you can find the occasional small beach. Like most of the Canaries, La Gomera's southern coastal region is invariably sunny (and good for a winter sun holiday) while inland mountains are often cloudy or enveloped in mist.

La Gomera - Flora & Fauna:
Dense forest covers the centre of the La Gomera. Known as the Garajonay National Park, this is one of the largest areas of laurel forest in the world. A haven for wildlife, the Canarian terrain is rugged with deep ravines and rocky outcrops; the scenery is spectacular, particularly on a clear day when you can see across to Mount Teide on the neighbouring Canary island of Tenerife.
La Gomera - Recreation:
Walking is by far the most popular outdoor activity on La Gomera and, due to the rugged terrain, there are many good walking routes all over the island although some paths are quite steep. Other popular activities include mountain biking, cyling and trekking.
Boat excursions to see the dolphins and view the dramatic rock formations along the coast can be taken from La Gomera at Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. There are tennis courts at the Hotel Jardin Tecina and mountain bikes may be hired in Valle Gran Rey - but be prepared to tackle some steep hills.
La Gomera - Beaches:
There are only a few beaches, and most are pebbles and black sand. The two main beaches on La Gomera are located at San Sebastian and Playa Santiago, with several small beaches at Valle Gran Rey and on the east coast at Hermigua and La Caleta.
La Gomera - Gastronomy:
La Gomera produces its own wine in Vallehermoso and the island has many excellent restaurants. Fish is normally served in the Canarian style - grilled and served with Canarian potatoes and spicy mojo sauces - and a speciality of La Gomera is watercress soup served with gofio, the local toasted cereal. Bananas, mangoes and papaya are grown in Valle Gran Rey and the sap of the local palm trees is used to produce a sweet syrup, 'Miel de Palma' - popular throughout the Canaries.
La Gomera - Getting there:
La Gomera only has a local airport with a few inter-island flights to Tenerife North and Gran Canaria. There is also a regular catamaran and ferry service linking the island with Los Cristianos in southern Tenerife. We suggest the easiest way to get to La Gomera is to take a morning flight to Tenerife which will allow plenty of time to connect with the afternoon catamaran or ferry.
Flights to Tenerife depart from most UK main and regional airports on Fridays and Tuesdays. A taxi transfer from the airport to the ferry port takes about 20 minutes and the ferry crossing to San Sebastian about 40 minutes. At San Sebastian you can take a taxi transfer to your accommodation or collect a holiday hire car.
