Brena Baja - History & Geography:
Until the 17th century, Brena Baja (lower Brena) and Brena Alta (higher Brena) were known collectively as Brena. The area is located on the east-southeastern part of the island of La Palma, south of the capital Santa Cruz de La Palma and north of the La Palma Airport. It is linked with a main highway encircling every part of the island.
Brena Baja, situated on the east coast of La Palma is a hillside village, on the outskirts of the bustling capital, Santa Cruz, and a short transfer from the airport. The village offers some stunning views along the coastline, and across to neighbouring Tenerife and La Gomera, with the sunrises in Brena Baja being particularly spectacular.

Brena Baja's beach resort of Playa de los Cancajos is ideal for those looking for some relaxing sunbathing on La Palma. Visitors staying at Brena Baja use the volcanic sandy beach at Playa de los Cancajos, the largest tourist development on the island. The beach is made up of a series of three bays set into the rocky coastline, and the protected crystal waters provide excellent conditions for swimming and paddling. The municipality was famous for its tobacco production, and its main industry today is still agriculture. The coastline and valley areas comprise mostly of farmland, while the lush mountainous areas of La Palma are forested or grassy.
The capital of La Palma is just 3km from Brena Baja, so the busy centre of Santa Cruz, with its cosy tapas bars, lively port and charming streets lined with palm trees, is a 5 minute trip by car. A trip to the capital is a must for culture lovers, as Santa Cruz has some interesting 16th century architecture, great art collections, beautiful churches and interesting museums.
The mountainous regions of Brena Baja are great for hiking, and there are footpaths throughout the area for those looking for scenic walks. Throughout La Palma, there are some great sights to see including the prehistoric caves of Mazo, and some areas of stunning natural beauty, in particular the national park, La Caldera de Taburiente, and the forests of El Canal y Los Tiles.
