Buger Mallorca, Balearic Islands

Buger - Overview:

Windmills, lovingly renovated houses and splendid gardens make the traditional rural village of Buger one of the most attractive in Mallorca. It is one of the smallest municipalities of Mallorca with 950 inhabitants and is an area of green valleys with a proud agricultural heritage that grew from the land's natural irrigation properties and mills. This picture postcard environment with rolling hills has a view of the Tramuntara mountain range and is a popular destination for cyclists and walkers. In the midst of this flowering landscape dotted with olive trees, forests and ferns flows the river Torrent de Buger. Holiday accommodation in this area is rare and visitors can still enjoy a traditional Mallorcan village atmosphere in a relatively undiscovered area.

Buger - History:

Buger has an important historical legacy dating from prehistoric times. The natural cave of Can Mossenya, on the Southern slopes of the Puig de Sa Mata Grossa, contains the oldest remains of human habitation in the area. There are, however, other important prehistoric remains situated in the talayotic settlement of Rafal des Puig.

Buger's location close to the road connecting Palma to Pollensa encouraged Roman development. During the Islamic period, Buger's favourable irrigation conditions led to the erection of numerous water mills, which, in turn, encouraged the establishment of its horticultural prosperity, the growth of argiculture on the main hill, and of several farms on other hills.

Under Islamic rule, Buger was owned by the juz of Inca. After the Catalan conquest in 1229, Buger was given to Barcelona. In 1368, Campanet became an independent municipality and parish, to which Buger and Ullaro belonged. In the 16th century, Buger fought bravely to regain its independence from Campanet, but failed mainly due to the opposition from the people of Campanet.

After a period of prosperity, Buger suffered at the hands of bandits and a plague swept through the area. This caused problems amongst Buger's inhabitants until the end of the 17th century, when economic and population expansion was re-established.

Buger - Places of interest to visit::

The Moli de Can Garindo is at present the only mill of the town that has been restored and has new sails. Some mills are situated on the outskirts of the town of Buger and still preserve their characteristic structure.

The Creus de Terme crosses, which originally determined the limits of the town, used to play an important part in the processions of Holy Week. In 1563, the bishop of Mallorca granted the licence to the inhabitants of Buger to build a church, due to so many people dying without having received Holy Sacrament, as they could not be moved to near-by Campanet. The Church of Sant Pere was the first church to be built in Buger, started in 1694 and completed in 1739.
