Capdepera

Capdepera - Overview:

Located on the North East of Mallorca, 75 kilometers from Palma de Mallorca Airport, Capdepera is an attractive seaside town with lovely beaches, several good restaurants and various places of historical interest to visit, including Arta Caves, Canyamel Tower and Capdepera Castle. If you're a keen golfer then there is a wonderful golf course just 6km away.

Capdepera - Sightseeing:

Capdepera is a tiny village 8km east of Arta and 3km west of Cala Ratjada. As you leave Arta moving towards Cala Ratjada, you'll discover across the legendary 14th century Castell de Capdepera. There are many tales about this fortress, many of which feature pirate sieges; especially the story of when a statue of the Virgin Mary placed on the battlements brought about a thick fog which saw off invaders.

The ancient hill on which the fortress stands was first settled during the Talayot period. The Moors built their castle onto this strategically important point, it was then conquered by Jaumes in June 1231. A hundred years later a Gothic chapel was added to its highest point.

Capdepera - Beaches:

Just outside of Capdepera you can explore mile after mile of lovely beaches, especially if you travel north, passing through olive groves, to 'Cala Mesquida'. 'Cala Guya' and 'Cala Molto' are two wonderful bays for swimming. They are directly next to each other along an unmade road out of Capdepera that is passable with care. 'Cala Son Moll' is a small beach but has modern facilities.

Capdepera - Fiestas:

From the 10th to the 16th July Capdepera celebrates 'Mare de Deu del Carme' - a celebration of the saints who protect fishermen.

Capdepera - Shopping:

There is a weekly market every Wednesday on the 'Placa Orient' in Capdepera and every Saturday there is a street market at 'Carrer del Castellet i carrer Camamil'.
