Puerto Pollenca (or Port de Pollensa) was originally a fishing village and today it is a popular location for a leisurely evening stroll. On warm, balmy evenings many take pleasure in wandering around the marina where the yachts are moored, past the pavement cafes and along the celebrated Pine Walk.

Pollenca - Today:

The name Pollenca originates from the Roman Pollentia, and Pollenca has remained pretty untouched by tourism. In recent years it has become a mecca for Majorca's specialist shoppers and there is a market here on Sundays. The town has grown considerably in the last few years, yet it still retains the tranquil atmosphere of a summer resort, particularly on the seafront itself, which is unusually calm and peaceful. Pollenca's main square is a hive of activity and a fabulous location for 'people watching' with a whole host of cafes and bars.

Pollenca - History:

The town of Pollensa was originally founded in 1229 with the Catalan conquest of Majorca, although the name goes back many years before this. Under Moorish rule the town was known as Al-Bulansa and by the Romans as Pollentia, although the original site of the Roman city of Pollentia currently lies in the municipality of Alcudia.

Pollenca is located in the valley enclosed by the Puig de Maria and the Calvari. The old town dates back to the 18th century and is made up of a series of narrow streets and historic buildings such as the Calvari, the Parish Church, the Cloister of Sant Domingo and the Jesuit School, among others. From the steps of the Stations of the Cross or Puig de Maria there are excellent views across the bays of Pollenca and Alcudia.

Pollenca - Culture:

Pollenca plays an important role in Mallorca's cultural heritage. Since the beginning of the 20th century Pollenca has been a favourite place for painters visiting the island. Contributions from Miquel Costa i Llobera, Ramon Pico i Campamar, Santiago Russinyol, Joaquim Mir, Anglada Camarasa (to name but a few) have put Pollenca on the European artistic and cultural map.

Pollenca - Port de Pollenca:

Agatha Christie chose Port de Pollenca as the setting for one of her stories and a number of celebrities have made Port de Pollenca their second home. A leisurely stroll along the promenade beside the yacht club is a lovely way to while away the evening.

From Port de Pollensa (or U-Port, as it is referred to by the locals) many excursions can be enjoyed by boat, by car or on foot. Port de Pollenca is not far from Formentor and Cala Murta, where a fiesta in honour of the poet Miquel Costa i Llobera is held every year.
