Santa Margarita (Santa Margalida) - Overview:
Located near to Muro, Santa Margarita is a small town in the Alcudia bay. It is considered to be one of the most important tourism towns, forming part of Can Picafort, Son Baulo and Son Serra de Marina. Santa Margarita, has 9km of fine sandy coastline, consisting of beaches and sand dunes, and is area of great ecological value. Santa Margarita is also a haven for archaeologists with 153 documented archaeological sites. For golf enthusiasts Santa Margarita is ideally situated between several golf courses at no more than a half hour drive away.
Santa Margarita (Santa Margalida) - Historic Sightseeing:
The initial construction of Santa Margarita's Church dates back to the 8th century, a few years after the Catalan conquest. However practically nothing of this initial building remains today. Construction of the existing Gothic building began in the 14th century and continued in the 15th and 16th centuries. The main entrance is of Baroque style and is located at the end of a large flight of steps.
Santa Margarita (Santa Margalida) - Fiestas:
As with all Mallorcan islanders, Santa Margarita's locals are keen to celebrate their heritage and hold various fiestas throughout the year. Santa Margarita's main ones are held on July 16th (Mare de Deu del Carme de Son Serra) and in Santa Margalida on 20th July. The first Sunday in September sees a typical Mallorcan religious folklore procession (la Beata Santa Margalida).
