Sencelles - Overview:
The rural municipality of Sencelles is 52km.sq. standing at 120m above sea level, with an average population of 2,350. Lying in the districts of Es Pla and Raiguer, Sencelles has preserved its charm and harmony with a traditional, rural Mallorcan lifestyle.
Its landscape is flat and criss-crossed by three torrents, which form a scenic, rustic landscape among holm oak trees and agricultural land planted with vineyards, almond and fig trees. It produces fine wine, which was the true driving force behind the local economy.
Sencelles - History:
Sencelles was home to Francinaina Cirer (1781-1855), who founded Ca ses Monges, the home of the Sisters of Charity, one of the most important elements in Sencelles' heritage.
Other recommended places of interest to visit in Sencelles are the eighteenth-century church of Sant Pere, the Rectory (1650), the flourmills at Can Mavi and Sa Cometa and the crosses dotted throughout the village.
A little over 1km from Sencelles, on the road to Inca, is Son Fred Talayot, an archaeological site dating to prehistoric times.
The hamlets in the municipality, formerly ancient Arab farmsteads, preserve the intimate essence of life in the Mallorcan countryside. Biniali, with the church of Sant Cristofol and the windmill of Can Xico, and Ruberts are the two most interesting to visit.
