Casa Picona, San Vicente (SVG-1285)

A charming and comfortably furnished, single storey country cottage which has been recently modernised but retains its original character. Casa Picona is situated down a quiet lane in the village of San Vicente, about fifteen minutes' walk from the nearest beach. It is completely enclosed within high granite walls, entered via a courtyard with trees and pots of flowers. The owner, Mari Carmen, lives discreetly at the front of the courtyard, sharing the same entrance gate. Through the gate there is an open covered area with what used to be the farm implements on either side, and is now space for a car. On the left hand side is the front door to Mari Carmen's house, and straight ahead is the courtyard with Casa Picona at the end. Mari Carmen's house is built along the wall and her windows look out over the surrounding fields, not into the courtyard. There is a stone path to Casa Picona, which is approx. 50m from the front gate. There are a couple of small trees and flower borders, and flowerpots dotted around this gravel based area, making it a pretty outlook from the terrace. There are 2 steps up to the wide terrace, which goes along the front of the cottage and at one end of the terrace is a door into the grass field next door. The exterior walls of the house are thick granite, and exposed stone walls feature in the lounge; the rest of the interior walls are painted white. The whole house has been completely rebuilt, so has a new kitchen and bathroom, while maintaining some of the family furniture. It is tastefully decorated, with pretty curtains, bedspreads, and pictures and plates on the walls. The floor is light grey tiled throughout the house, with rugs in the bedrooms and lounge.
The front door leads directly into the central passage and to the kitchen on the left of the front door. The fitted kitchen has hob, electric oven, extractor hood, sink, fridge/freezer, worktop and cupboards with tiled surround. It is well equipped with pots, pans, crockery and cutlery, toaster, coffee maker and an old decorative wood burning range, round wooden table and chairs. The lounge at the end of the passage has a window with view over the fields at the side of the house and another window over the front terrace and courtyard, a sofa which can also convert to a bed suitable for children, 2 armchairs, coffee table, small round table and a wooden chest.
The double bedroom has a window with a view over the grass fields at the back of the cottage. The family bathroom has a window over the back fields, bath with hand shower, bidet, basin and WC. The second bedroom has 2 twin beds and a window to the front terrace, the third bedroom has a double bed and a window to the back with views over the fields.
Outside Casa Picona has a terracotta tiled terrace with table and chairs and portable barbecue. There is an enclosed courtyard suitable for children to play in. The washing machine is located in a small store just 10m from the front door.

Location

This house is completely enclosed within the high granite walls and the new green entrance gate beside the lane, which goes down to the beach of Pineiron, on the north side of the peninsular of El Grove (O Grove in Galician). There are also several other lovely sandy beaches within 1km. Casa Picona is just 75m from the road that comes to San Vicente from O Grove town, and from the village playground, the bus stop and the telephone booth beside it. The small village shop is a bit further up in the centre, about 300m away. The village of San Vicente is located on the O Grove peninsular, which in turn, is situated at the entrance to the Ria of Arousa, the largest of the Rias Baixas or lower estuaries. Only a few centuries ago it was an island, until sand built up and formed the beautiful beach of La Lanzada and now just one road connects it to the 'mainland'. The village of San Vicente is situated about 7km from O Grove. San Vicente is a quiet spread out village, largely undiscovered by tourists who usually stay nearer to the beach of La Lanzada. Rural life continues in San Vicente as it has for centuries, and most of the houses are smallholdings with their own vegetable gardens and chickens, cows and dogs. Beach Sand 1km.
