This perfectly preserved 8th Century castle is an exceptional example of architecture from the times of the Reconquest. It has been lovingly restored to retain the aura of is Arabic origins and romantic legend. Standing majestically on a hill top, the Parador de Alarcon rises up to dominate the skyline over a fertile bend in the Jucar river.
The Castle has a rich history and has been the scene of many sieges and revolts. Founded by the Muslims in the 8th century, it was captured by King Alfonso VIII in the 12th century, became the ancestral home of the Marquises of Villena and was also inhabited by the notable man of Spanish literature Don Juan Manuel.
The interior decor of Regal oak wood blend with rich fabrics to accentuate the castle's medieval character. It is home to a collection of paintings including works by Tapies, Redondela, Sempere, Amadeo Gabino, Alvaro Delgado, Martinez Novillo and Menchu Gal.
Much of the Castle's splendid architecture has been retained including an imposing tower and battlements. Military motifs from the reconquest period dominate the communal rooms, complementing the stone and Castilian wood decor.
The Parador de Alarcon's restaurant offers a delicious menu specialising in Castilian cuisine, including local dishes such as lamb and game, followed by delicious desserts such as the sweet almond suspiros from Alarcon and Alaju.
