A luxury Parador hotel in a lovingly restored 12th century monastery, which was declared a National Monument in 1907. The Parador de Cangas de Onis is set against a majestic mountain landscape, occupying a prime water-side position on the right bank of the River Sella in Villanueva. It is conveniently located just 2km from the town of Cangas de Onis and is an excellent base from which to explore this beautifully lush green landscape, with easy access to the Covadonga mountain, Picos de Europa and the eastern-most parts of Asturias and western Cantabria.
King Alfonso I 'The Catholic' constructed this fabulous building in 746. The current monastery was founded on this site and run by the Order of San Benito until the Desamortizacion de 1835 (large-scale selling of State and Church assets). Exhibits in the Parador de Cangas de Onis' splendid state rooms of archeological remains, artefacts and pottery uncovered during the refurbishment are testament to this distant past. The monastery was declared a National Monument in 1907 and features an added wing, which has been designed in keeping with the original architecture.
The region has a rich folklore heritage with numerous celebrations and popular festivals throughout the year. The main feasts are: San Antonio (June 13th), the Pastor Feast in La Vega de Enol (June 25th), and the most important Feast of the region Nuestra Senora de Covadonga, the Patron Saint of Asturias (September 8th).
It is well worth watching the international canoeing descent of the Sella river (second Saturday of August); the cheese contests of Cabrales and Beyos; chestnuts contest in Arriondas and the cider contest in Nava.
There are many local places for sight-seeing. In Cangas de Onis, you can explore the chapels of Santa Cruz and San Antonio, and a visit to the area would not be complete without a trip to the Royal Site of Covadonga with its museum, cave and church.
The area is a haven for nature lovers and the Picos de Europa mountain range offers a host of activities including fishing, canoeing, trekking, climbing, horse riding and cycling.
Other interesting places include the centre for Nature Interpretation in Picos de Europa, Santa Cruz and Santa Eulalia de Abamia, the Monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva (where the Parador is located), the prehistoric caves of Buxu and Tito Bustillo, the lakes of Enol and Ercina, the gorge of Beyos y el Ponton, the ravine of the Cares river, and of course the beautiful coast from Ribadesella to Llanes.
The fine restaurant at the Parador offers a delicious menu. Here you can sample regional specialities including El pote Asturiano (Asturian broth); Fabada (a dish of beans with herbs and sausages) and locally produced cheeses, especially Cabrales, Gamoneo, and Beyo. The traditional regional drink to accompany these dishes is cider.
The Parador offers a choice of centrally heated and air conditioned accommodation, including fifty three twin bedrooms, nine double bedrooms and two single bedrooms. Each bedroom has a private bathroom, telephone, satellite television, safe and mini bar.
Guests staying here can enjoy the Parador de Cangas de Onis' shared facilities of a restaurant, cocktail bar, children's playground and swimming pool. There are facilities for disabled guests and car parking is available.
