The Luberon area takes its name from the French mountain range that stretches for 60km from west to east - from the Vaucluse, 70km north of Marseille, to the Alpes de Haute-Provence. The Massif du Luberon encompasses several mountains; the Grand Luberon and Petit Luberon being the most well known. The peak of Mount Luberon is Mourre Negre in the Grand Luberon; a rounded summit standing at 1,125 metres high. The Aiguebrun river runs between the Petit Luberon and Grand Luberon.
As such, the Luberon is haven for nature lovers as it supports a wide variety of ecosystems within its rocky limestone terrain. The Luberon is a protected area and was designated as a Regional Natural Park in 1977. Twenty years later, in December 1997, the Luberon was officially recognised by UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
