Granadilla - Overview:
Although rural tourism is mostly concentrated in the north of Tenerife, we have discovered the very Canarian village of Granadilla in the south east of the island. Granadilla de Abona lies in a rich area of the island of Tenerife, where the best oranges are grown. It attracts many people and is a very important agricultural centre with rural housing developments, typical Canarian bars and traditional architecture.
600 metres above sea level, and conveniently situated just 10km from Tenerife's international airport (Reina Sofia) and the beaches of El Medano (11km), there is also a 2km stretch of golden sandy beach along with la Tejita beach. Granadilla de Abona t is the administrative centre for the south east of the island and a short drive from Mount Teide and Los Cristianos.
Granadilla de Abona - Geography:
Granadilla de Abona is a municipality of Tenerife, located in the south of the island, occupying an area of 155 square kilometres. In recent years, the population has greatly increased due to a growth in immigration from Western Sahara, Colombia, Cuba and other African and Latin American countries.
The municipality extends from the high altitude centre of the island to the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain of Guajara (2,718 metres high) is situated in this municipality. Guajara is the second highest mountain on the island after El Teide. The municipality�s landscape is similar to the entire south of Tenerife being dry and desert-like.
Granadilla de Abona - Out & About:
Tenerife's Reina Sofia Airport is located in this municipality, as well as the beachside town of El Medano (The Sand Dune), where many important windsurfing competitions are held. La Montana Roja (The Red Mountain), a volcanic cone located in El Medano, is a protected natural reserve, along with five other "espacios naturales" (natural spaces) which fill a quarter of the municipality�s total area.
