Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz - Overview:
Puerto de la Cruz is a colonial town full of charm and one of the oldest resorts in the Canaries, having received visitors for over 100 years. The mild climate, lush vegetation, and beautiful scenery, including views of the Orotava Valley and Mount Teide, are natural attractions.
Man-made attractions include the famous Botanical Gardens, the Loro Parque zoological gardens, the fabulous Lido, Golf La Rosaleda golf club and the Casino. Pretty squares, churches, street cafes and fascinating shops can be found in the old part of town. Puerto de la Cruz is definitely the most attractive of the major resorts of Tenerife and has a certain atmosphere not found in more modern resorts.
Puerto de la Cruz - Geography & History:
Puerto de la Cruz is located on the cooler north-west coast of Tenerife and is the main tourist resort in the north of the island. It is an historic old town with both an air of tradition and modern tourist facilities.
The oldest resort on Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz has welcomed visitors since the 19th century, when doctors prescribed patients to take a trip here to benefit from the healing qualities of its spa. Since the early 1960s Puerto de la Cruz has established itself as a major resort on Tenerife, yet still offers a taste of the old colonial era.
Puerto de la Cruz - Beaches:
The main beach at Puerto de la Cruz is Playa Jardin - a reconstructed stretch of black sand imported from the sea bed to create a Blue Flag beach, backed by lovely lush gardens full of tropical plants.
Smaller rockier beaches are located either side of the resort, and watersports, including diving, are available in Puerto de la Cruz.
Puerto de la Cruz - Out & About:
In addition to the beaches, Puerto de la Cruz is home to the aquapark, Lago Martianez, an 8 acre lido containing a series of salt water pools, fountains and waterfalls cleverly designed by the Canarian artist, Cesar Manrique.
Puerto de la Cruz has narrow cobbled streets and historic old buildings. The main centre of the resort is the Plaza del Charco, with its picturesque tree-lined streets and grand colonial buildings a popular place to have a drink and enjoy the street performers. The town has a vast array of shops, bars and restaurants.
Puerto de la Cruz - Sightseeing:
Puerto de la Cruz is home to the largest parrot collection in the world at Loro Parque. It also has the largest dolphinarium in Europe, the Botanical Gardens, and the castle of San Felipe.
Also close by is the national park of Pico de Teide, home to the Mount Teide volcano, which gives a wonderful backdrop to the resort of Puerto de la Cruz.
