Tacaronte
Tacaronte - Overview:
Tacaronte is a typical Canarian town with a selection of local shops, bars, restaurants and a beach. If you travel to Tacaronte from La Laguna you will cross one of the flattest and greenest areas in Tenerife. From here you can continue on to Los Rodeos airport and the Cruz Chica viewpoint, from where you can look over a beautiful landscape. Tacaronte is well known for its wine. The surrounding villages produce quality wines and are members of the association called Tacaronte-Acentejo winegrowers.
Tacaronte - Geography:
Tacaronte is a rural municipality located in the north of Tenerife, covering an area of over 30 sq.km along a strip that stretches from the volcanic heights of the island to the sea. Ancient houses situated in the middle of the countryside and large manor houses share this area with urban developments. It has a privileged location, being as it is so close to La Laguna and the capital, Santa Cruz, and only 4km from the northern airport of Los Rodeos.
The climate here is more humid than the south with less sunshine but the compensation for this is the beautiful green scenery. In the winter, although warm near the coast, the temperature does decrease with altitude, particularly at night.
Tacaronte - Gastronomy:
Tacaronte is renowned for its vineyards, which produce some of the best wines of the entire archipelago. The great efforts of the local producers have resulted in numerous international wine awards. The Tacaronte-Acentejo certificate of origin, the first granted in the Canaries, is a further guarantee of the quality of these wines.
The farmers market is a particularly interesting local event. It is an opportunity to see the wide variety of local produce offered for sale, including home-made products such as confectionery, wines and honey.
Tacaronte - Out & About:
Tacaronte is home to the parish church of Santa Cataliana, built in 1664, where you can see some of the most important altarpieces in Tenerife. You can see several images, among which the carving of La Virgen del Carmen, by the artist Lujan Perez. You can also visit the other church, Santisimo Cristo de los Dolores, which has a remarkable carved figure of Christ standing beside a cross, brought here from Madrid in 1662.
Car hire is firmly recommended to enhance your enjoyment of this delightful area. A drive of about 20km will bring you to the chic resort of Puerto de La Cruz, with its fashionable seafront cafes, endless shopping possibilities, Loro Park zoological gardens and large man made lake, 'Lago Martianez', where you can swim and relax.
The Spanish town of Icod de Los Vinos is also easily accessible (about 40km away) and has a pretty centre with an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants. The famous dragon tree, a popular tourist attraction, is also found in the centre of Icod, as is a pretty Canarian garden, both of which can be viewed from the little tourist train which will take you around for a small charge.
From Tacaronte you can visit the many pretty villages, which are found in this region. Alternatively, travel inland by Puerto de La Cruz to explore the lush Oratava Valley or take a trip to the Las Canadas National Park, which surrounds Mount Teide, the highest point in Spain. The village of Las Mercedes (north east of Tenerife) is very pretty and has recreational parks and view-points that are well worth a visit, especially on a clear day. Tenerife airport, Reina Sofia, is about 75km away, via Santa Cruz.
